image Skype, today, shortly after a sale to private investors, announced that the Skype Extras Developer Program is no more. In case you do not know, this is the equivalent of the iTunes App store, or Mozilla Firefox’s Add-on Library. New Extras will not be included, however the old Extras will continue to work until they expire.

Skype sent an email to developers and posted this, on its blog:

Despite the incredible breadth of Extras developed for Skype, simply not enough people were using them to justify our continued support of the Extras programme. Unfortunately, effective today, we will shut down the Skype Extras programme.

It might seem as if the investors have potentially made a mistake – and the question is, will they keep making mistakes? Would eBay selling Skype eventually run the program to the ground? Only time can tell.
