LONDON, ENGLAND – Lord Mandelson, the first Secretary of State in Parliament, has imposed new laws on the way file-sharers will be treat in the near future. He’s suggesting a 3-strike system, similar to the one implemented in france – you will be warned twice for file sharing, and if you continue, you will lose right to the internet all together. Several companies, especially TalkTalk, are speaking out against this.
At first, pirates will simply be faced with download caps, and bandwidth cuts, called “throttling” – a practice many British ISP’s already use to catch file sharers, notably BT and Virgin Media. Then, if allowed, later these pirates will be disconnected from the Internet completely – for almost a year.
The idea seems potentially silly – how can they prove which household is abusing the internet connection? Which individual in a business, which person in a neighborhood, in a cafe, etc. It’s trivial. The European Union already considers Internet access one of the basic human rights.
Beware, UK users – you might lose your right to the internet soon. You might get F’d in the A for someone else’s crime.
