Google appear to have been incredibly careless – disregarding the fact that the language known as Go! already exists – rather, has existed for around 6 years – even having a book (“Let’s Go!”) published in 2007. It comes to call whether Google have been careless or simply acting like a corporate giant, which goes against their commonly-associated mantra “Don’t be evil”.
Frank McCabe, owner of the original Go, doesn’t seem too pleased by the corporate giant’s move to name their own language Go. He said that “The earliest conception of it was around 2000. It takes a lot of effort to produce a reasonably well-designed language. I am concerned that the ‘big guy’ will end up steam-rollering over me. I do not have resources to invest in legal action; but do not intend to let Google keep the name without them being explicit that they are steam-rollering over us.”
At the moment, several people support renaming the language ‘Issue 9′. Reasons for this, albeit it vague, include the fact that the Google Go developers also created Plan 9, a Bell Labs operating system.
