For the first time in my life, I can honestly say this – Dell have got their groove on. I mean, seriously, have you seen these things? Companies that focus on design should be worried. Dell’s new range of laptops and desktops are some of the nicest-looking things ever – I considered purchasing a Dell Studio Open a while back, unfortunately discontinued. But who remembers the days of the ugly dell boxes?

The Dell Desktop range at the moment boasts a refreshed Inspiron, coming in multiple colors, an XPS tower, and an iMac-style XPS all-in-one monitor PC. Their laptop range on the other hand, boasts Minis, Inspirons, also multicolored, Studios and XPS laptops. All of which very attractive.

So yeah, check out Dell’s new range. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Steve Ballmer Shows the HP Tablet

Steve Ballmer Shows Off the HP Tablet, CES 2009

Well, it’s not the Courier, unlike we highly anticipated. Shame that, but it’s still a nice concept. Microsoft did have a 2-screen tablet to show, but it ran Windows 7 that hadn’t been modded to suit two screens – so it kinda sucked software-wise.

Anyway, the Microsoft/HP Tablet announced was a cute little thing – and I can tell Steve Ballmer was pleased to announce his little answer at the Apple Tablet. In fact, this little thing is pretty much everything the Apple Tablet is supposed to be. It has multitouch. A thick black gloss border (hell, HP are going mad with Macbook Pro style displays).

Something Microsoft just aren’t learning here is you can’t grab your OS and force it into every form factor. The OS on these things must be suited to them, specialized to them. You can’t just cram an OS designed for mouse-and-keyboard input and expect it to work fine on a touchscreen. And that’s something I’m sure Steve Jobs would mention, as rumors fly around of the tablet’s completely new OS.

Granted, these things are cute. As Steve Ballmer puts it, “they’re more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC. These things are perfect for reading, browsing the web and taking entertainment, on the go,” he states, “it will likely be available this year.”

So yeah. It’s nice, it’s likely not too expensive, it runs Windows 7 (and hopefully gets a modded version to suit tablets), and it’s going to be available before the ‘Apple Tablet’. Granted, it’s not a courier, but it’s nice whatever it is.

Here’s an interesting find – the original version of the Mac vs PC ads. I do love finding stuff like this. As far as I’m aware, this was during the 1980’s – 20 years of ceaseless attacks, it’d seem! Here’s the image (click to enlarge! – make sure you have javascript enabled.)

Ballmer: Windows 7 is ‘The Best Ever’

Fear me, for I am a bat!

Fear me, for I am a bat.

This guy never quits, does he? Ballmer is completely infamous for his downright strange way of promoting his business, Microsoft, in various matters. He’s also famous for downright fanboyism actions, like stamping on an employee’s iPhone, or the ‘developers’ chants, both of which are YouTube viral videos.

This time, Ballmer is insisting that Windows 7 has had double the sales of any other OS ever in this period of time. If he’s being honest, it’s not too unbelievable – the hype around the OS and the preorders were the highest ever. If so, it means it’s still selling well. And to be fair to the man, it’s already accounting for 4% of web-accessing devices – Vista realised this result after over 7 months.

But the man can’t stay at this level of modesty. “Windows 7 is simply the best PC operating system that we or anyone else has ever built,” he stated.

Oh well. Ballmer can live in his little world for a bit longer.

The Windows 7 Interface has been debated whether it was taken from Mac

The Windows 7 Interface has been debated whether it was taken from Mac

Microsoft Executive Simon Aldous has been quoted claiming that the Windows 7 interface has borrowed a Mac OS look to make users feel more at home using the system.

Aldous told UK computing magazine PCR that “one of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it’s very graphical and easy to use,” he went on to say, “what we’ve tried to do with Windows 7 – whether it’s traditional format or in a touch format – is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics.”

It’s been long since debated whether Microsoft copy Apple in terms of design, but it’s had heavy evidence against it – for example, many people have criticized Microsoft’s Zune for being a blatant iPod Touch rip off. The operating system, with each subsequent release, becomes more and more similar to the Mac OS operating system – for example, Windows’ recent decision to display the taskbar icons as full icons and without text, very similar to the Mac OS dock interface – which has been heavily criticized for the similarity to Apple’s operating system.

Windows 7 Logo

The latest release of Microsoft’s chain of Operating Systems, Windows 7, was released today. Being so far the most anticipated and perhaps the best publicly-received release of Windows, Windows 7 ensures the continuation of the Windows OS. Several attempts by Apple to thwart Windows 7’s release, such as Snow Leopard’s release, or the release of new iMacs just days before, haven’t worked enough and the media hype surrounding the OS is strong as ever. image No, Microsoft. Not only is this an invasion of privacy but this has got to be illegal. Can’t be content with Google whacking the hell out of your browser, you now have to attempt to take down Firefox, too.

Beware users. A ‘critical’ windows update will install a Firefox plugin that cannot be removed. This plugin isn’t harmless – it opens a security hole which allows hackers to take over someone’s computers.

You’re believing a façade if you think that Windows 7 is not worth upgrading to. Yes; dig at me that this is too opinionated and shouldn’t really be news as such, but we aren’t just a news site.

Windows XP, will become 2 generations obsolete at the end of this month. This is pretty important. Unless your machine is outdated since 2004; just before vista, it should strike home that you’re running an operating system that is not safe – it’s nearly 6 years since it was replaced, and nearly 9 years since it came out. That’s a long time!

Just think about it. XP is dead.

Windows Mobile Start Menu Microsoft have done it again – and produced something which I can’t deny – it’s attractive. In fact, it’s not only attractive, I feel that it could be a major competitor to the iPhone – and may soon steal away from apple’s amazing reputation. So, what makes it an improvement? It looks amazing now, for sure. It surpasses the quality of its predecessors, en mon avis.

Windows 7 Logo Windows Vista… sounds fashionable to you? Perhaps not. But why? Windows Vista recieved incredibly strong criticism from the press, most notably about its power-hungry resources – which together took up nearly an entire gigabyte of RAM. However, I feel that Microsoft have, for once, learned from their mistakes and are ready to produce an OS that will flounce Vista’s sales – and maybe even take a bite out of Apple.
