I'm not :(

McDonald’s have decided to serve fresh, free WiFi to most of their US branches. The decision comes after an announcement, in December, and now, you have the ability to feast and tell everyone on Facebook – oh! The power.

Even though there’s mostly free WiFi in most of the European and quite a lot of the other worldwide branches, the US has been rather slow to it – they’d previously charged $2.99 for just 2 hours of the access.

This comes from a deal with AT&T, who appear to be attempting to boost their reputation as a network. McDonald’s could even soon become an alternative to the stereotypical writer or blogger in a coffee shop. 11,500 of their 14,000 fast food restaurants in the US will receive free WiFi, while the other 2,500 are unlikely to receive the bounty – having previously not had WiFi.

It’s pretty ironic that a fast-food restaurant such as McDonald’s wants people to stay – I mean, isn’t the whole concept of fast food as ‘pack them in like sardines, get them out as fast as possible’? Who knows, it could be McDonald’s in an attempt to be somewhere more sociable.

Owner Fined for ‘Pub’lic WiFi

A pub owner in the UK has been fined £8,000 ($13,000) for someone illegally downloading copyrighted content from their free WiFi hotspot, says Graham Cove, the managing director of hotspot supplier The Cloud.

Graham believe this case to be the very first of its kind, yet will not identify the pub concerned, because the owner has not allowed him to reveal the details of the case yet.

This is just a start to some pretty serious issues that could begin to affect the idea of free WiFi – it's almost as if this was set up to crush the idea of freedom and being able to access WiFi anywhere. It's funny that someone would get punished for supplying the public with something free. Also, it's like arresting a shopkeeper because someone stole from their store. Doesn't work like that.

The major Wiltshire town has become the first town to have full free WiFi coverage.

Swindon, Wiltshire, just became the first town in the UK to have official full-town mesh free WiFi. The WiFi will be accessible from over 1,500 access points, and will cover the entire towns population. That means all 186,000 residents of Swindon will have free WiFi connection for ever – however, having access limits and download limits – but with a possible upgrade to 20mb speeds. What’s more, Line rental is free, and there’s no connection charge.

This could be the start of an entire wave of towns or cities within the UK to get free WiFi. It’s more on a point that cheap, not necessarily good WiFi should be free to all.

The Swindon Borough Council leader Rod Bluh stated that, “this is a truly ground-breaking partnership which will have real benefits for everyone living in Swindon. We’re doing it, we’ve done it, and we’re the first to do it.”

Anti-virus software, aswell as popular services offered by Microsoft and Google will be on the network to keep everything running smoothly. The WiFi is provided by Signal, and has cost the town nearly £1mil – however, it could be a great implementation that could cause more people to get faster upgrades for the internet.

Google & Yahoo’s Free WiFi

image Google, and later Yahoo, both this week announced that they’d be supplying free WiFi – Google, to airports, Yahoo to Times Square. Yahoo? If you don’t live in Times Square, who cares? However, many people commute and placing free WiFi in airports is incredibly likely to generate even more user loyalty. Sorry Yahoo, you’ve lost this one.

For those of you who do not care, Free WiFi is a virtue. Not many places still supply WiFi for free. It seems Google and Yahoo are now actually pointing out the triviality of not being able to access free WiFi in public places.

imageThe iPhone has arrived in China – but the Chinese aren’t happy about the lack of an incredibly important feature – the ability to use Wi-Fi, caused by China’s recent ban of Wi-Fi, which is now lifted. Really, the iPhone is losing out a huge market share because of the lack of a Wi-Fi functionality. I can see where the anger is coming from – once again, a device that lacks a feature that is standard with the iPhone, lacking from a country – like iPhone tethering missing from the US, thanks to AT&T.
