Firefox 3.6 has been released today. The new edition of the browser boasts faster speed and better compatibility with todays standards, namely being HTML5-enabled.

[blippr]Firefox[/blippr]. Yeah, you’ve probably heard of it. Firefox is the browser that really challenges IE where Netscape fell short. Whereas Chrome and Safari hold roughly 4% of the market each, Firefox gets a nice ~25% share, not toppling IE’s 60%+. Firefox 3.6 has been in beta-testing for months, and a release candidate was issued this month.

Assuming there were no problems, they chose to release it. Firefox 3.6 boasts the HTML5 rendering engine, as well as improved rendering (page loading) speeds and javascript. It has autocomplete, too, and plenty of bug-fixes… but still no accelerometer support, lame. I don’t know about you, but there’s still some things it really needs before I can switch to it… like the theme, particularly hideous on Mac… come on, Firefox 4.

Firefox 4.0 is set to have a later release date than expected. In fact, it could be pushed back to over a year from now – the thoughts of waiting over a year are dreadful! Even Firefox 3.6 is being set back to the end of the first quarter of 2010. Question is, why?

Firefox 3.6 bringing some cool features to do with accelerometer support and customization is being released ‘at the end of the first quarter of 2010′, even after its planned end-of-2009 release. I don’t particularly care – but the big punch is Firefox 4.0’s release, being pushed back nearly 6 months. With a slick Chrome-like interface that abuses the Aero look, and some great new features particularly with screen space saving and separating tabs into individual processes, Firefox 4 promises a lot – and better not just be a whole ton of hype from Mozilla that they can’t supply. But an extra unprecedented 6 months? Eh.

Here’s a screenshot of the new proposed UI.

Well, eh.

Jetpack RocketsJetpack LogoMozilla Labs’ Jetpack is something impressive – it’s making add-on development easier for the general folk, so that more add-ons can be created. However, seeming rather aimless recently, Mozilla have boosted the pace by creating a gallery – much like the Firefox add-on library, this will make things easier to get add-ons for Jetpack – thus making the entire experience far better, right? It’s been around 6 months since Jetpack 0.1, the first release – and Mozilla strives to make it more capable and important.

image No, Microsoft. Not only is this an invasion of privacy but this has got to be illegal. Can’t be content with Google whacking the hell out of your browser, you now have to attempt to take down Firefox, too.

Beware users. A ‘critical’ windows update will install a Firefox plugin that cannot be removed. This plugin isn’t harmless – it opens a security hole which allows hackers to take over someone’s computers.

Mozilla have announced that Firefox 4.0 is in the making. The new web browser will be available in 2010. Prior to the release, version 3.6 will come in Q4 of 2009, with a faster Javascript engine and quicker loading time (rejoice!). There’s not much insight into what Firefox 4.0 will include, but, judging by early mockup screenshots from Mozilla’s website the team favours the Chrome style user interface.

Firefox 3.6 is also set to debut Mozilla’s first mobile browser, which will utilize the Tracemonkey Javascript engine.
