Search Engine Bing is in hot water with New York Times’ Nick Kristoff, over censorship of content while browsing in Chinese.

Bing, basically has an issue, which they dcalre as a bug, that some content, especially that of the banned practices or ‘cults’ in China. The big issue is that it’s acceptable for search engines to block certain content to users of a country if the country says so, like Google does for many websites for Chinese users – but Bing isn’t just blocking content for people in China. They’re blocking content that China deem unacceptable to any Chinese users worldwide. So if you browse from New York in Chinese, it’ll still block the content that China doesn’t want.

Controversially, Nick Kristoff is asking his users to boycott Bing until they fix this issue.

A statement from Bing assures user it’s a ‘glitch’ and will be fixed.

robert-pattinson-attends-the-premiere-of-inglourious-basterds-in-cannes

Robert Pattinson is quite the spotlight for the geek world, recently.

Robert Pattinson, interestingly enough, has been quite the center of attention for the geeky world at the moment, rather than just the Twilight fandom – considering he just accidentally insulted Microsoft’s efforts to promote search engine Bing. At the red-carpet premiere of his new film, Twilight: New Moon (which, might I add, is one of the most-hyped films I’ve heard of recently – let’s hope it’s good), he went into the ‘Bing Box’ for a 2-minute interview with Ryan Seacrest.

Annoying publicist aside, during Ryan’s attempt to crack in on the gossip of a potential relationship between the two twilight stars, Robert Pattinson was handed a bag with ‘bing’ on it. The first thing he replies is, “What’s Bing?” in an incredibly dumbfounded manner. After being told, he awkwardly replies “Thanks,” and is tugged away by his publicist.

It’d seem Microsoft’s vast spending on Bing haven’t been enough – I’ve seen adverts on the television and on various other forms of media, on-line and in magazines – but it’d seem it’s still not enough to replace many people’s mentalities that Google is the only search engine.

The video is below.

Bing Bing has been a pretty good competitor in the search engine race, and, as we’ve witnessed, it’s caused Google to get a little desperate (doodle every other day, new features rapidly being pushed out in beta status, anyone?). Since its release in June 2009, it’s been steadily growing, but this month slipped for the first time. Losing 1% this month, and apparently recording to have lost 5%.

Bing has already delivered a certainly beautiful search engine; which you can see below;

Bing 'Space' Theme Bing 'City Lake' Theme

A picture which changes often, instead of Google’s. Hovering over squares in the picture reveals information and a corresponding search link.

Anyway, the statistics .According to Hitwise, Bing’s market share in the US dropped from 9.48% to 8.96% in the passing month, with a month-over-month percent change of –5% in the market share. If their merger goes ahead, Bing and Yahoo! together are worth 25% of the market – not a bad starting position to take on Google with.

I think this is just part of an ongoing trend – all wars have a saw-tooth style curve of activity. We may soon be using ‘Bing’ as a verb, although not quite as addictive as ‘just Google it’.

It’s something that’s perfectly possible – in fact, even likely to imagehappen, in the next few years or even months. Microsoft’s Bing search engine has dug its fangs right into Google’s share  of the search engine market – lowering it by around 2% – considerably large for the web titan.

My question is, how long will Bing last until its used up and useless? Only time can tell, really. Microsoft have been pumping thousands of pounds into their Bing search engine in an attempt to spread to the web in another fashionable media other than their slowly-dwindling messenger protocol, Windows Live Messenger.
