Tristan Clopet's Purple EP

Tristan Clopet's Purple EP

Album Title: Purple EP
Artist: Tristan Clopet
Rating:

I am sat here listening to Tristan Clopet for the very first time. This new EP entitled “Purple” is not Mr Clopet’s first shot at making a record; in fact his “Duende” gained a lot of positive press and was called “a fantastic debut” by Miss Media. Tristan Clopet has already gained much recognition in the music industry for his interesting and different take on the indie music, as well as coming through with much innovation.

On the surface, not much has changed in the sound, Tristan’s influences are still very much present, Clopet evokes Hendrix on the track “Superficiality is a Sin” and elements that wouldn’t sound too out of place on a Rage Against The Machine LP are present on the EP’s opener, “Proximity Bomb”.

The sound in which he brings to this record is that of an ageing indie sound, however this much revived by electronic influences which have been scattered about the songs, as well as the occasional nod towards hip hop. The album itself is rich with variation – no song sounds remotely similar, which in a sense can work and… not work; at the same time. I mean, for someone like me with a very varied music taste, it’s within full reason and is fully acceptable to have a ton of variation.

The album has some killer tracks; with a deadly catchy bassline in ‘Black Panther Party’; and my personal favourite ‘So Alive’ echoing of words of love. I mean, just listening to this song kinda shakes me up; I really love it – the chorus heavily reminds me of Kings of Leon, almost – and it’s all the while catchy.

Interestingly enough, he’s offering his album for ‘whatever you want to pay for it’ – as in, if you want to pay £0.50, or £100, he’ll take anything, which really boils down to the soul of the person who’s getting it.

All in all, Mr Clopet has done well in creating an album which can be viewed as both mainstream and innovative; I believe if enough effort is made, Clopet has a good chance of becoming something recognizably new, and hopefully penetrates the mainstream artist market.
