Already, Amazon have updated their Kindle eBook Reader again. They boast features such as 50% better contrast (how you measure this I’ll never know), a slightly longer batter, a slightly smaller size, and a new color – nothing terrific, don’t worry. It comes in 2 scoops; WiFi-only and 3G version, much like the iPad.
“We developed this device for serious readers,” claims Jeff Bezos, CEO, “at these price points, it may be much broader than that. People will buy them for their kids. People won’t share Kindles any more”.
Orders begin on Thursday, at $139 for the WiFi only flavour and $189 for the 3G-enabled version, coming to over 100 countries – something a little wider than what Apple can offer, for sure – and will begin shipping August 27th.
Amazon has become increasingly competitive in the eBook reader scheme, being challenged by Apple’s high-market iPad LED-backlight eReader, and even on its own from with the Nook reader from Barnes & Noble. In June, the Nook was dropped to $199, causing the Kindle to be dropped to $189 only a few hours later. If that isn’t competitive, I don’t know what is.
