Jessica Cox is a programmer and writes various games and functional software. She takes time today to explain the new Google UI.
Did you notice a change recently while making your daily google search? You thought your page didn't load completely because the links on the main page were missing?
Fear not, for this is Google's latest strategy to simplify the search process – kinda! The company has made a change to the user interface in hopes of making it easier and faster for users to find the information that they need, without all of the clutter that was previously on the page. The only items that are displayed on the home page are the logo, the input box for text, and the two search buttons. The rest of the page is displayed only after the user moves their mouse.
In theory, this sounds as if it would speed up the searching process, however, tests have been done that prove that it now takes longer to make a search. This isn't a major issue because it only takes a few milliseconds longer to make a search and overall, this change to the UI is beneficial to newer users because the page is no longer cluttered with useless links.
But, it's a bit of a different change to the company who have been remarkably the same for about 10 years – they changed their logo in 1999, as far as I'm aware.
