Jobs: Google’s Mantra is BS

Steve Jobs, in the Apple Conference earlier, had something to say. He had something to say about his competition, and those who crumbled in his wake.

It’s Bullshit.” were the only words that popped into the Apple leader as he thought about Google’s mantra, “Don’t Be Evil”. He also noted on Google’s Nexus One, stating that ‘[Apple] did not enter the search business. Google entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We will not let them.’

He gets ahead of himself, though. He goes on to call Adobe “lazy” on the principle that “they have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it.” (Perhaps on the absolute shoddyness of Mac Flash). “When a Mac crashes, it’s usually because of Flash”, he alledgedly told everyone. He also states that “the world is moving… to HTML5.” However Jobs is also ‘nostalgic about the kick-ass Adobe of old’.

Oh, and one more thing…

Heh. Take that, Google.

I just had to.

These suckers rule. I want one immediately.

I really, really do want one of these. It’s a futuristic pod. It’s like an Apple store inside, strange pinecone-reminiscent wooden shape outside.

The interiors deceive the exterior.

It’s created in the UK. The inventor claims its reasn of invention was “frustration at the commuting lifestyle, with its attendant road congestion, air and noise pollution, road rage, running costs and time loss.”

It’s a single room inside a wooden pinecone shell. The interiors are immaculately perfect and white, with a circular desk for maximum efficiency. Also, the interior pictures show a nice office chair, flowers and an iMac. How cute.

I think everyone needs this. I don’t even know why I do.

Google: Die IE6, Die

Google wants rid of IE6 - who doesn't?

Frankly, IE6 is awful. It’s a poor attempt at a Web Browser that doesn’t support any of the new standards – poor CSS2, no CSS3, Poor HTML4, No HTML5, and awful rendering and stupid rules. Internet Explorer is bad enough, but IE6 is the worst of the lot – and tons of people still use it.

However, stuff like this may be about to change. Google have made a decision that from March 1st, most of their applications will drop IE6 support and stop working for it – in an effort to literally force the web to evolve. Along the list of applications to kill in March are Google Docs and Google Sites, as well as some search engine features.

Later this year support will also be phased out for GMail and Google Calendar, a move which could really twist the knife in Internet Explorer’s back.

It’s a smart move for the web supergiant, as they begin to attempt to modernize their efforts and push away from the ‘old web’ onto new standards, such as the much-desired HTML5, which they’ve added support for on YouTube, another one of their services.

But really, if you’re viewing my site with IE6, stop immediately. This is not a joke.

Why Wordpress is a Great CMS

Wordpress is a perfect blogging tool. With high customizability and easy-to-edit code, as well as incredibly useful PHP short-codes, making great sites with Wordpress is a snap. But why stop there? It can be a Content Management System too!

It’s not really something that shouldn’t be used to its full potential. Simple short-codes can drag up easy functions, themes are relatively easy to construct – not to mention the vast amount of resources floating around the internet for help on Wordpress. Wordpress doesn’t just do blogs – in fact, using Wordpress solely to blog is ‘like buying a Swiss Army Knife to use only one blade.’ Wordpress is perhaps beyond flexible, and can be used for an entirety of different sites.

With some simple editing and use of the loop, Wordpress can be turned into pretty much any kind of regularly updated site. Not only that, but it makes it far easier for developers to create rich websites in minimal effort.

Marina Marsh, president of ESI Web Services, states:

“When clients ask us if this can be done or that can be added to their site, we never have to say no… with WordPress it is possible to add, upgrade, expand without spending a fortune. A complex site with a lot of custom coding added, which would typically cost $25,000+ if an enterprise CMS were used, costs $10,000 – $12,000 with WordPress. We can create a fully functional online business solution with features like shopping cart, membership area, directory listing, newsletter subscription, forum, SEO and much more for under $6,000.”

It makes things so simple mainly through the use of incredibly easy and simple PHP short-codes that are really a boon for developers, as for example:

<?php the_permalink(); ?> (without spaces)

Generates the following result:

http://tekcube.com/blogging/why-wordpress-is-a-great-cms/ (the link to this post)

This is a simple function which displays the permalink (direct-link to the post). If I was to change the link to the post, this would update automatically without me having to edit more than one thing. But there’s tons of simple functions that require very little knowledge of PHP to work, just like this. B

But anyway, what I mean is that Wordpress can sufficiently reduce costs and improve efficiency as a CMS. Where’s the point in learning difficult code to sift through thousands of lines and, with great pain, develop a difficult-to-use interface when with Wordpress plugins and that can do it easily? (Not to mention how easy it is to install plugins, with a single click, and update them all with another click).

Wordpress isn’t a CMS. Well, it’s not advertised as a CMS. But it performs like a CMS. And because of that, you can build pretty much any kind of website with it.

Found this while browsing YouTube. It’s Hitler’s personal response to the release of the iPad.

It’s pretty funny.

As you can see, we’re not the only ones miffed by Apple’s whopping mistake.

You Need Adapters for iPad USB

The designers of the iPad, in all their greatness, didn’t add any ports – that means no USB and no SD cards… But don’t worry, at extra charge, you can buy adapters. Hurray! Thanks Apple for providing.

To be fair, this is realistically financially smart. It means they have an extra form of income thus making them ever more profitable.

However… this also means people will be less inclined to purchase the iPad, thus crossing out niche markets.

Well done, Apple, for pioneering the modern age with sense and practicality. Pfft.

Will be updated tomorrow. (Just as a note, this is not a review. This is simply explaining the products features.)

Right, so it’s finally here. The tablet that will destroy the computer, save the world and cure all illnesses. Well, maybe not that far. In fact, I doubt it’s gonna do any of those things collectively, but something it sure as hell will do is provide a challenging market in the eReader zone. Unusual, however – the iPhone left everyone in the phone market virtually crapping their pants, while I’m not so sure the iPad will do the same to the eReader market, being an unusually small and yet fast-developing market. Even though the iPad is bloody cheap ($499), it needs a computer to sync – and there’s no file storage. It’s more eReader/Desktop accompaniment than standalone tablet computer.

The iPad runs in a similar fashion to the iPhone, 4 columns of apps on multiple screens, a big difference being a dock at the bottom more similar to the Mac dock, yet only in appearance – it also allows for desktop backgrounds. You can add apps or websites to the pages, similar to an iPhone. The desktop backgrounds is a nice touch.

The browser, much unlike the iPhone, has a full web rendering engine that easily shows a full website when portrait, with a 1024×768 resolution. The large resolution makes it easier to read the web, and it presumably loads faster than the iPhone’s slow-as-ass browser.

In other terms of its UI, it has some useful friend-organization tools, such as a new contact page that heftily resembles an actual address book, and shows the contact list and the contact image side-by-side. This could be useful, this could be useless. I am a banana.

iWork for the iPad.It has something interesting though – full iWork for the iPad, which will make using it to actually write and do work possible – better than the iPhone, much. This will allow Pages, Numbers and Keynote documents to be saved onto the iPad then either directly presented or printed or moved to a Macbook for presentation.

The thing’s able to display books in a unique app called ‘iBooks’ (what a surprise). And it truly might be something that could outplace the Kindle, showing pages with an attractive UI resembling a bookshelf.

As for prices, here’s a list:

16GB – WiFi: $499; 3G: $629;
32GB – WiFi: $599; 3G: $729;
64GB – WiFi: $699; 3G: $829;

Some claim being remarkably cheap for an eReader, the prices seem a little unusual, especially with paying $130 extra just to use 3G… which you pay $20 a year to use. What’s up with that? I suppose things will sort out soon.

The iPad cannot multitask, which is definitely not a boon to its sales.

Just for humour:

Origin unknown.

More on this tomorrow.

‘Puppy Tweets’, The way forward.

Apple may believe it’s going to alter the technology world as we know it with some kind of tablet, but I’m now going to tell you, wait for it…

The world has already changed. Welcome to the new age… The dog age.

American individuals will shortly be able to buy a product called “Puppy Tweets,” a product actually designed, tested, and released by the Mattel Corporation. Firstly, you need a dog with a Twitter account. (I wonder who has one of those.) Then, you need to use $30 to buy Puppy Tweets, a synthetic sound-and-motion sensor that is fastened onto your dog’s collar and sends out numerous pre-programmed tweets, for example, “YAHOOOOOOO! Somedays you just gotta get your bark on.”

Sounds like something I gotta get my dog.

It’s official. The Apple Tablet is here. And It’s called iPad.

Steve unveiled it just now, and he’s more than proud about it. Read the Liveblog until later: http://tekcube.com/live/

Apple claimed the iPad would have an interaction interface that you would be surprised by. Unfortunately, it’s surprisingly familiar.

Apple Tablet: Will it be Tomorrow?

A guess at how the tablet device might look.

Apple, as you may know are hosting a press conference in cupertino, California, tomorrow and they are supposedly releasing a new product: their famed ‘Apple Tablet’.

But still details about this apparent mythical device are unknown. New York Times calls for a tablet with ‘iPhone App’ compatibility and a screen roughly double the size of the iPhone. Other people seem to think it has a CD drive, and runs simplistic applications – without multitasking.

Then there’s the claim it’s 13″ – and it boasts a large screen running a completely custom OS, one that we’ve never seen before. And it’s going to be something completely game-changing to run hand-in-hand with the release of ‘iPhone OS 4.0′. Not only that, they claim this magical machine will somehow be paper-thin and have superior stats to even their Macbook range.

There’s so much flying about, but what if the rumour of it being an oversized iPhone is true? Apple have been long-since credited with innovation, so if it is really something like an oversized iPhone that runs apps one-at-a-time, then it’s nothing innovative. It’s little more than a large copy of their old project, and that is something that’s pretty disgraceful.

But yeah, the Apple press conference could be something we’ve never seen before, but it could also be something completely disappointing. We’ll just really have to wait and see.

Oh Bill, you teenage heartthrob you.

Bill Gates – a name you less frequently hear about as Steve Ballmer takes control of Microsoft – you may know joined Twitter about a week ago. The move, appears to be for multiple causes – promoting his website, for example, or possibly to gain a better grasp with the Internet – a better social image, if you will. Much like the Pope’s recent decision to spread his thoughts on the internet, Bill Gates wishes to show you how he’s changing the world.

Here’s a little chart from Gates Foundation, showing us really how they’re changing the world.

Well? What do you think?
